What is Solar?Solar power is energy that is derived from the sun and converted into heat or electricity. It is a versatile source of renewable energy that can be used in an unlimited number of applications, providing power for everything from cars and boats to houses and spacecraft. Solar power is also clean and pollution-free.Energy from the sun is converted into solar power using solar panels. Solar panels convert the energy in two ways. The first way involves the use of solar thermal applications. Solar thermal applications use the sun’s energy to provide direct heat to air or liquid. Solar thermal panels can be used for both residential and larger-scale applications. The second way involves the use of photoelectric applications which use photovoltaic cells in converting energy from the sun into electricity. Photovoltaic cells are considered low maintenance and well suited to remote applications in addtion to residential.  |

  Types of solarPhotovoltaic (PV) By themselves, modules or arrays do not represent an entire PV system. We also need structures to put them on that point them toward the sun, and components that take the direct-current electricity produced by modules and “condition” that electricity, usually by converting it to alternate-current electricity. We might also want to store some electricity, usually in batteries, for later use. All these items are referred to as the “balance of system” (BOS) components. Combining modules with the BOS components creates an entire PV system. This system is usually everything we need to meet a particular energy demand, such as powering a water pump, or the appliances and lights in a home, or, if the PV system is large enough, all the electrical requirements of a whole community. Thermal Solar water heaters use the sun to heat either water or a heat-transfer fluid in the collector. Heated water is then held in the storage tank ready for use, with a conventional system providing additional heating as necessary. The tank can be a modified standard water heater, but it is usually larger and very well insulated. Solar water heating systems can be either active or passive, but the most common are active systems. |

 Federal Tax IncentivesCongress just passed historic solar legislation that will increase the use of solar energy all across the America, and the President signed it into law. HR1424 offers a tax credit calculated at 30% of the complete solar installation project, including parts and labor. New Mexico Financing IncentivesHB572 allows a homeowner in New Mexico to spread the cost of a solar installation project over 20 years and pay no money down. Homeowners (or business property owners) ask for a special assessment on their property from county apprasiers. The county pays for the solar installation and increases the property tax over the next 20 years to pay for the project. The maximum allowable project cost is 40% of the total appraised value of property. |
